When you think of the magical land of Disneyland what comes to mind?
Mickey mouse? Rides? Family fun? What about intimate apparel?
Well, when Disneyland opened in 1955, there was a Main Street shop that sold the latest bras, intimate apparel, and petticoats!
Hollywood-Maxwell’s Intimate Apparel Shop was the full name of the shop owned and operated by the Hollywood-Maxwell women's clothing company. The look of the store was very Victorian and had a "grandma" sitting on the front porch. Once inside, visitors browsed brassieres and took a look at torsolettes. The newest fashion styles in bras were always on display, and park-goers could revel in bra history from "The Wizard of Bras!"
The animatronic Wizard told you everything you ever needed to know about women's undergarments. Once the Wizard show concluded, the Magic Mirror came to life to inform the shoppers about what the store had to offer.
Let's listen to what the Magic Mirror had to say.
Unfortunately, most guests were not looking for this kind of souvenir while visiting the park. The store closed 6 months later in January 1956 and the Hollywood-Maxwell company eventually went out of business.
This is how the shop looks now. Would you have visited this shop? Are you surprised they had a shop like this in Disneyland? Or do you think this idea was just too Goofy?
