Many of us here in the Wonder Weird office love anything to do with Sid and Marty Kroft. These two producing brothers created some of TVs best and worst TV Shows, Hr Puffnstuff, Lidsvile, Land of the Lost and many more. They also created their own amusement park that looked just as amazing as their TV shows
The World of Sid and Marty Kroft indoor theme park
The multi level theme park was opened on May 26,1976 in the middle of Atlanta, GA . The park featured elaborate attractions such as a large carousel adorned with mythological creatures of crystal and a giant pinball machine-themed dark ride in which the riders would sit inside large ball-shaped pods and ricochet through the "machine."
Visitors received a "ticket booklet" with four tickets, one for each area. Most started at the top floor by riding the world's longest freestanding escalator, working their way down through the four areas of the park.
Tranquility Terrace occupied the top 3 levels out of 6, followed by Uptown on the next lowest level, Lidsville on the next, and Living Island Adventure on the bottom level.
With all these exciting ideas you wonder how popular was this crazy park? Unfortunately, it was not that popular and the park closed only 6 months after it opened. There are a few different reasons why this park failed, 1) the ticket price was too high for a park that would only take a few hours to go through, many people would rather visit the six flags amusement park that was nearby for the same price, 2) the location of the theme park was not the best, it was in the middle of Atlanta and was surrounded by several housing projects. It would scare families away from wanting to visit. The city of Atlanta did promise the Krofts that if they built their park the city would put money into the city to clean it up, that never happened and families never came to the World of Sid and Marty Kroft.
This is the only known footage of the park
Now let the planning begin for the wacky world of the Wonder Weird theme park!!!!!
