We did warn you about how awesome that news report was.. but lets talk about some of the great toys that were in it. How many of them did you ask for? How many of them did you get? It was interesting to see that board games were a popular item for grown ups, that Raggedy Ann was a popular doll in 1986. We are again going to take a deeper look at 3 of the toys they talked about...
Teddy Ruxpin is an animatronic children's toy in the form of a talking bear. The bear's mouth and eyes moved while "reading" stories that were played on an audio tape cassette deck built into its back. It was created by Ken Forsse. Later versions would use a digital cartridge in place of a cassette. At the peak of his popularity, Teddy Ruxpin became the best-selling toy of 1985 and 1986. A cartoon based on the characters debuted in 1986.
The big draw and appeal of this toy was that you saw its mouth and eyes move. It felt like you took home a character from Disney World !! Also the design of the bear with it is cute face really was a big seller.. that was until the original company worlds of wonder went out of business just after 3 years.. the toy design was sold to Toy GIANT Hasbro and again Teddy was riding high. But this did not last for long and Teddy Ruxpin would be on and off the toy store shelves of the next few years, in fact 4 different toy companies would try to bring him back to the popular world..
But here is some good news... In 2018, it was announced that Alchemy and The Jim Henson Company will make a new Teddy Ruxpin TV series. The series will be animated in a digital puppetry form and will be aimed at preschoolers.
Lets take a look at a classic Teddy Ruxpin Commercial
Barbie and the Rockers
The year 1986 saw barbie doll sales take a little dip due to a new girl that came to town, or should we say a new girl that took the stage?? JEM !! This totally outrageous doll really was a hit!! The folks at Mattel decided they needed something to compete against this fast selling doll and that was how barbie became a rock star!!.. They were on the market for roughly 3 years and there was a direct to video film made to go with the line titled Barbie and the Rockers: Out of this World. This was followed by a sequel called Barbie and The Sensations: Rockin' Back to Earth. The line was brought back in late 2017 as a Target exclusive.
Don't forget every doll came with a audio cast with songs and a story if you want to relive that you can listen to a tape now!!! Just watch the video below:
